"Revenge" – alongside "The Maidens' Vows" – is Aleksander Fredro's most famous comedy. Critics wrote that it is like a "polonaise played by the sound of words" and everyone agreed on one thing – it is Fredro's most Polish comedy.
The neighborly dispute between Cześnik and Rejent becomes a basis for portraying human flaws, mocking pettiness, and reminding why in the end it is reconciliation that rebuilds what hatred destroyed. The comedy includes a romantic intrigue aimed at the young lovers, the hilarious Papkin, and the appetizing Podstolina.
A separate motif is the castle where the action takes place. As a co‑hero of the piece, it fits into the motif of the pre‑romantic Gothic novel, where the dispute over the castle propels the characters. The origin of this motif dates back to 1764, when Horace Walpole published "The Castle of Otranto."
Fredro is sometimes counted among the continuators of the Polish Enlightenment, yet he has his unique Polish style — it both irritates and amuses us in "Revenge." This style is the highest test of comedy. Thanks to the exceptional staging by the Theatre of Polish Classics we can be transported to the Kamieniec castle and see why we so willingly build walls between ourselves and what happens when, for a moment, a peaceful truce prevails.
Let the will of heaven be done; one must always agree with it!
In short: the age‑old quarrels of Cześnik and Rejent, the innocent love of Klara and Wacław tested by intrigue, Papkin's far from gallant but hilarious courtship, and the matrimonial plans of the widow Podstolina – in one word: REVENGE!
