Awarded the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, nominated in major categories for the Golden Globes and the European Film Awards, and also nominated in two Oscar categories, “It Was a Simple Accident” — the latest film by Jafar Panahi — has nearly 40 awards and 110 film award nominations to its name.
The film is a poignant humanist reflection on trauma, forgiveness and morality. Iranian director Jafar Panahi returns with a film that — like his previous works — strikes hard at the authoritarian regime and asserts that “Forgiveness is one step away from revenge.”
The action begins with the titular accident: a car breakdown on the way home forces a family with a young daughter to stop at a roadside repair shop. There they meet two mechanics, one of whom offers help, while the other is Vahid, who observes everything from a distance.
The man is a former political prisoner detained during anti-government protests. The torture he endured during interrogation severely affected his health — every step causes him pain. In the unexpected visitor Vahid recognizes his tormentor, a commissioner of the Iranian police, known among prisoners as Kuternoga.
In an act of revenge he decides to abduct him, hoping it will bring him solace. First, however, he must confront his doubts: is this really the right man and is revenge an appropriate form of reparation.
