Epic Symphonic Metal | Netherlands
A lot can be said about the Dutch epic symphonic metal band EPINIKION, but one thing is certain — their story is unique. The band was formed by former athletes Renate de Boer and Robert Tangerman, who originally set themselves an ambitious goal: to create a rock-opera album. Without formal musical education but with great talent and determination, they released the well-received debut “Inquisition”.
The name Epinikion means “a hymn for the victor.” In ancient Greece, epinikia praised the heroism of athletes after triumphs at the games — an apt description for a band that rose like a phoenix after ending their sports careers.
In 2023 Kimberley Jongen, Maarten Jungschläger and Rutger Klijn joined the lineup, and in 2024 Michal Gis completed the formation. With this lineup the band recorded their second album, whose production was finished in 2025. From the start EPINIKION has combined powerful guitar riffs with progressive and heavy metal influences, enriched by monumental symphonic arrangements. The new material goes even further — it is a unique blend of each member’s inspirations and creativity.
A new album, “The Force of Nature,” will be released soon — mixed and mastered by Jacob Hansen, with cover art by Giannis Nakos. This is a deliberate step toward an even more epic sound.
