WANDA CZEŁKOWSKA ART IS THE ABSOLUTE FORM OF MATTER Every millimetre matters. There were deliberations, analyses, research and testing on a model, whether the focus was on figuration, the expression of gesture or, finally, conceptual work. Proportion, space and the mutual relations between 3D objects — she dreamed of a world without gravity, of infinity. This sought-after infinity, measured with a compass and designed down to the millimetre, is the dynamic of this exhibition. Vertical Infinite Straight Line. The Ellipse was first presented at Królikarnia in the exhibition Wanda Czełkowska. Retrospection in 2016. It fit into the space of Alina Szapocznikow's studio as if it had been specially designed for the location. It is infinity, non-existence and movement. The canvases from the installation The Interior and Exterior as Centre (1996). Around this centre orbit two symbols: the figure (the greatest fascination from the artist's early period) and the head (an intellectual motif recurring in various forms throughout Wanda Czełkowska's work). Study X (The Human Figure) from 1957 is a standing figure from the metaphorical figuration trend, combining the characteristics of youth and the decline of existence, consciously non-binary. It closes the artist's period of fascination with figuration. Another motif and a higher level of abstraction is The Head, 1972. At the time of its creation (and it was made for Atelier 72 in Edinburgh), it was too personal, exposing the artist so much that she did not dare to show it. The distance of courage (from the creation of the work to its presentation) in this case is 44 years. Finally shown at Królikarnia, it continues to prompt the artist to further reflections and new versions. Wanda Czełkowska, artist and sculptor.
