    About the event

Sinfonia Varsovia invites you to the premiere of an opera in 16 scenes at the Grand Theatre. The inspiration for the performance was Grzegorz Piątek's book "The Best City in the World. Warsaw in Reconstruction 1944–1949," which provides a panorama of the first post-war years of an extraordinary undertaking that united people regardless of their views and in defiance of the ravages of war. The main protagonists are two women: a modernist architect working at the Bureau of Reconstruction of the Capital, modeled on Helena Syrkus, whose pre-war dreams of rebuilding a dysfunctional city transform into a macabre reality, and an American journalist, reminiscent of Anne Louise Strong – a reporter fascinated by communism, traveling through war-torn Poland with the Red Army. Their meeting will lead both to reevaluate their worldviews. The opera about Warsaw is not only a story about the tragic and glorious chapters in the city's history but also a very contemporary work about the life of a metropolis suspended between the projects of architects and urban planners, the ideologies of politicians, and the needs and dreams of its residents.
