March – April 2026
Together with the Italian Cultural Institute in Kraków, Kino KIKA invites you to weekly Sunday meetings with the series Women, Directors from March 1 to April 26. The programme includes a selection of eight films directed by Italian women and offers a look at the female contribution to the development of Italian cinema from the 1970s to the present day.
It is in that decade — marked by deep social and cultural changes in Italy: labor and student protests, the rise of the feminist movement, the divorce referendum (1974) and the abortion referendum (1978), up to the tragic Circeo massacre case (1975) — that the female figure begins to emerge in cinema with new strength, independence and the ability to tell reality from an unprecedented perspective.
This change does not occur through a violent break with the past, but through a deep transformation of narrative codes: cinema made by women introduces new sensitivities, new aesthetics, new ways of posing questions about the world. A language that makes room for doubts before action, care as a political act, sensuality as a form of resistance and self-knowledge as a path to understanding.
Alongside historical figures such as Liliana Cavani and Lina Wertmüller, the series presents acclaimed directors like Cristina Comencini, Francesca Archibugi, Roberta Torre, Antonietta De Lillo, Alice Rohrwacher and pays tribute to Elvira Notari — the first Italian female director, screenwriter and producer to achieve international success — on the 150th anniversary of her birth.
Eight films, eight female voices that weave together art and commitment, poetry and politics, memory and vision. It’s a unique opportunity to rediscover Italian women’s cinema as a space for reflection, resistance and freedom.
