    About the event

She says - beloved And he replies - burial mounds She whispers - only one And he replies - ruins? Do you know who this little poem is about? ------------- We invite you to visit the extremely interesting Warsaw necropolis, the Evangelical-Augsburg Cemetery, which was opened on May 2, 1792. Here you will find the graves of hundreds of people whose names are written in the pages of history, not only of Warsaw. Some of their descendants still live in our city today. ------------- Details about this event can be found on the Evenea ticketing platform: 🎟️ https://app.evenea.pl/event/cmewangaugsb25102025/ We publish the dates of all events on our company website: https://www.zwiedzajznami.com.pl You can also sign up for the mailing list and receive, once or twice a month, information about upcoming events: https://www.zwiedzajznami.com.pl/newsletter ------------- Although the cemetery suffered greatly during World War II (soldiers of the "Zośka" and "Parasol" battalions fought heavy battles with the Germans over the Evangelical cemeteries), it is still a place full of history. We will visit, among others, the resting place of the founder of the "E.Wedel" company and his descendants, the owner of the Saxon Palace, the best forger among architects, members of the Scottish MacLeod clan, the owner of the salon that enabled Ignacy Paderewski's career, founders of companies today known as "Polfa Tarchomin" and "Polfa Warszawa", the woman known as the "Mother of Orphans", outstanding brewers, co-owner of "Mała Ziemiańska", the author of the "Dictionary of the Polish Language" and many, many others. We will learn the story of a tombstone that became the source of a legend about being born in a grave and find out which company's bricks are still considered the best today. We will see a grave that was the destination of pilgrimages by Polish patriots in the 19th century and hear about a family persecuted by the personal order of Heinrich Himmler. We will look at probably the only image of a Trabant car and the emblem of the USSR on Polish cemeteries. We will also seek answers to questions such as: - where does the strange title of the event come from? - where did the most famous Warsaw cabman travel? - why does a forearm stick out of the coffin? - what was the name of the Russian officer who preferred to shoot himself in the head rather than give the order to fire at the crowd? - why do Orthodox believers rest in the Evangelical-Augsburg Cemetery? - at whose funeral was... beer distributed? - who made a fortune selling sheet music, and who - pianos? - what do the hands placed on one of the tombstones refer to and what does Sherlock Holmes have to do with it? - what connects the YMCA building, the cross-city tunnel, and the Krasiński Ordination Library? - what steps did the wife take when her husband squandered money on a wild lifestyle? - why does the pyramid have only three sides? - whose Polish surname appears on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris next to the names of Prince Poniatowski and General Zajączek? - whose tombstone was an excellent advertisement for a company? - why does Icarus have springs in his wings instead of feathers? We will also see beautiful works of stonemasonry art.
