    About the event

“Beau Travail” by Claire Denis at a special screening at Kinoteka! 🎟️ Tickets for the screening on 17.01 are available at the link below: https://kinoteka.pl/film/piekna-praca/ After the screening, there will be a discussion as part of the Pełna Sala Film Discussion Club. “Beau Travail” by Claire Denis is a sensual, poetic drama woven around the memories of Sergeant Galoup – a former soldier of the French Foreign Legion, who, after years, tries to put his past in order. Denis transposes motifs from Melville’s “Billy Budd” from a sea vessel to the sun-drenched spaces of Djibouti, replacing sailors with legionnaires. The plot unfolds elliptically, more through images, gestures, and the rhythm of military exercises than through dialogue or classical narration. The sensual cinematography by Agnès Godard and the precise editing by Nelly Quettier give the film an almost balletic character, emphasizing the tension and hidden desires of Galoup, who cannot confront his own fascination with the young legionnaire Sentain. Denis creates here one of her most evocative stories about the body, desire, and repression. Scenes of drill, repetitive activities, and military discipline pulse with erotic energy, revealing the protagonist’s inner conflict. “Beau Travail,” awarded at the Berlinale and widely acclaimed by critics, combines dreamlike poetics with realism, focusing on what is unspoken, visible only in glances or muscle tension. The film took 1st place in the ranking of the best LGBT+ themed films according to the Pełna Sala portal. The film fits into the broader work of Claire Denis, one of the most important authors of contemporary cinema. The director, who grew up in Africa and worked with creators such as Wim Wenders and Jim Jarmusch, often explores themes of postcolonialism, migration, cultural conflicts, and corporeality. Her style is characterized by an intuitive approach to narration, a focus on sensual experiences, and visual precision, co-created with her longtime cinematographic partner Agnès Godard. “Beau Travail” is the quintessence of her artistic sensitivity – a hypnotic, intimate film open to interpretation.
