Denis transposes motifs from Melville’s “Billy Budd” from a sea vessel to the sun-drenched spaces of Djibouti, replacing sailors with legionnaires. The plot unfolds elliptically, more through images, gestures, and the rhythm of military exercises than through dialogue or classical narration. The sensual cinematography by Agnès Godard and the precise editing by Nelly Quettier give the film an almost balletic character, emphasizing the tension and hidden desires of Galoup, who cannot confront his own fascination with the young legionnaire Sentain.
