Family Ukulele Workshop (2 hours)

Workshops for families – parent + child

Introduction — 10 min
Goal: integration of families, creating a safe and friendly atmosphere

Program:

• short welcome
• introductory round: “Which song do we like to listen to / sing together?”
• distribution of instruments
• setting rules: we support each other, we don't judge, we have fun

Getting comfortable with the instrument — 15 min
Goal: to show that the ukulele is easy, light and friendly for small and large hands

Exercises:

• how to hold the ukulele (versions for children and adults)
• first string strums (strumming: down)
• playing a simple rhythm together
• “Question–answer” game: parent plays → child repeats (and vice versa)

First chords — 20–25 min
Goal: first real playing together

Chords adjusted to children's and adults' abilities:

• C, Am, F
• G – optional for willing adults

Exercises:

• calm finger placement (parent helps the child)
• changing chords together
• playing in pairs: parent + child as one “band”

First songs together — 30 min
Goal: joy of playing and singing together

Repertoire:

• traditional children's songs (e.g. Panie Janie, Stary niedźwiedź mocno śpi)
• simple, well-known family melodies
• songs based on 1–3 chords

Work plan:

• rhythm practice (down – down – up)
• slow chord transitions
• adding singing and simple movement gestures
• playing together “without stopping”

Playful-creative block: “Family rhythm” — 10 min
Goal: building bonds and creativity

Tasks:

• each family chooses one chord
• creates a short rhythm or musical “slogan”
• the rest of the group repeats it

Further pieces and group playing — 20 min
Goal: reinforcing skills and the feeling of being a band

Simple progressions:

• C – Am – F
• C – F – C

Exercises:

• playing as a whole group
• role swap: child counts the rhythm, parent plays
• joint song endings (one-chord “on the count!”)

Mini family concert + recording — 5–10 min
Goal: strengthening pride and joy from playing together

• performance of 1–2 songs by the whole group
• possibility to record a short video – a beautiful family keepsake

Closing — 5 min
Goal: encouragement to continue making music at home
