
The School of Young Criticism is an innovative, open, and free educational project. Experienced, respected, and professionally active editors and journalists teach the understanding and creation of media. In direct contact and an atmosphere conducive to dialogue, they share their knowledge and skills. This semester is dedicated to television, the creation and understanding of video messages. Original lectures are conducted by: - KATARZYNA JANOWSKA - JOANNA DUNIKOWSKA-PAŹ - RADEK KOTARSKI - RADOMIR WIT Camera work during workshops is taught by MAGDALENA KASPEROWICZ. During four full-day sessions, the instructors will talk about what working in television and audiovisual media means to them. What challenges video creators face today, how technological, social, political, and economic changes affect their profession, and what the future of traditional media might be. Whether and how the development of Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube has changed the way of working with the camera and the quality of content presented in front of it, and what from the television workshop can be useful for online creators. We will discuss mission, ethics, responsibility, work ethos, professional choices, as well as reach, market share, changing viewer expectations, competition, and economic realities. During the workshop classes, participants will learn the basics of video craft related to work in traditional and new media. They will learn self-presentation, improve elements of public speaking, constructing statements in front of the camera, and conducting interviews. In the end, they will invent, prepare, and produce video materials that will be published on Big Book Cafe channels. For whom, where, and when? ✨ Participation in the SCHOOL OF YOUNG CRITICISM classes is free. Meetings take place at Big Book Cafe MDM, ul. Koszykowa 34/50. The SCHOOL OF YOUNG CRITICISM is designed for people aged 17-25, but enrollment is open to all interested. 📅 In spring 2024, there will be four full-day sessions: 11.10, 25.10, 15.11, 29.11, divided into two parts: lecture from 10:00-13:30 and workshops from 15:00-18:00. Recruitment will be based on declared readiness to participate in the entire course, candidates' media interests, age, and order of applications. PROGRAM OF CLASSES: - Saturday, October 11 - 10:00-13:30 ONE YOUTUBE AND ONE HUNDRED MILLION BROADCASTERS – lecture by RADEK KOTARSKI Polyphony or cacophony? Oasis of independent creators or vanity fair? One of the most recognizable YouTube creators, Radek Kotarski, founder of Polimaty, explains the phenomenon of the largest video content aggregator of our time. He talks about how YouTube has changed the world of audiovisual messages and shaped new viewing patterns, awakening viewers' expectations. He explains the mechanisms of algorithms, shows how to create ambitious, high-quality, and high-reach content. And how to gain popularity among over one hundred million channels on YouTube! Thanks to practical tips, we will learn how to create our own channel step by step, attract viewers' attention, and build a dedicated, engaged community. How to monetize content and – finally – create a recognizable personal brand. RADEK KOTARSKI – journalist, author of programs, films, podcasts, and books, speaker and entrepreneur. His most popular productions include: Podsiadło Kotarski Podcast and the cult Polimaty. Winner of prestigious awards, owner of Altenberg publishing house, co-founder of the LifeTube partner network. - 15:00-18:00 IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA – workshops with MAGDALENA KASPEROWICZ How to work in front of the camera, construct statements, set information hierarchy, focus the viewer's attention, and create visually attractive and substantively valuable messages – experienced journalist and educator Magdalena Kasperowicz shows her workshop and gives tips on how to create your own. The result of the classes will be the recording of original video materials. The best will be published on our information channels. MAGDA KASPEROWICZ – journalist, linguist, media speech therapist. Author of radio and television programs. Associated with Radio Chillizet and TVP. As a trainer and speech therapist, she prepared journalists from TVP, Polish Radio, and Eurozet Group for appearances in front of the camera and microphone. Originator and coordinator of training and workshops for students of media and artistic speech therapy. In her workshop-educational work, she combines linguistic knowledge with journalistic and stage experience, inspiring young participants to consciously, creatively, and boldly use their voice and language. Her classes teach not only technique but also self-confidence and professionalism in working in front of the camera and microphone. - Saturday, October 25 - 10:00-13:30 ALL FACES OF TELEVISION – lecture by KATARZYNA JANOWSKA Katarzyna Janowska, one of the best journalists and authors of television and internet programs in Poland, talks about the power of television, the challenges facing media creators today, and the transformations the audiovisual market is constantly undergoing. What is it like to work in a big TV studio, and what is it like speaking to a phone camera? How does working in public media differ from recording an episode for one of the most popular news portals in Poland? We will talk about effective and attractive ways of presenting ambitious cultural content on TV and online, the art of conducting interviews, credibility, reliability, and professionalism. We will consider whether there is still room in today's media for long formats, in-depth conversations, and nuanced messages. And how to use new technologies and omnipresent screens to talk about important matters. KATARZYNA JANOWSKA – award-winning TV, radio, and press journalist. Initiator of the cultural award "O!Lśnienia," promoting Polish culture. - 15:00-18:00 IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA – WORKSHOPS WITH MAGDALENA KASPEROWICZ - Saturday, November 15 - 10:00-13:30 WITH A CAMERA AMONG POLITICIANS – lecture by RADOMIR WIT Political journalism is one of the most important fields of media, providing citizens with knowledge about what is happening in their country. Parliamentary correspondent Radomir Wit will talk about the role of political journalism, the craft of working in the Sejm, and the specifics of fast media. How to find important information, hot comments, how to work with a camera on the move, in an unpredictable environment, how to talk to politicians, how to ask difficult questions and get answers. We will learn the secrets of working under pressure. RADOMIR WIT – political journalist, associated with TVN24 since 2016. Parliamentary correspondent, author and host of the program "Kampania #BezKitu," and the series "Sejm Wita" on TVN24GO. He started at Academic Radio LUZ 91.6 FM in Wrocław. He dealt with culture, music, and entertainment, among others at Radio Traffic, Radio ZET, TVP2, and Polish Radio. Later, he realized that politics is more interesting and since 2015 has been tracking and reporting on Polish political life. - 15:00-18:00 IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA – WORKSHOPS WITH MAGDALENA KASPEROWICZ - Saturday, November 29 - 10:00-13:30 MORE THAN A MISSION – lecture by JOANNA DUNIKOWSKA-PAŹ How the most important news program of TVP1 is created, what it's like to work live in front of the camera, and what skills are necessary to maintain professionalism and credibility in the face of dynamically changing events. Joanna Dunikowska-Paź, the host journalist, talks about the backstage of working on "19:30." We discuss how news programs and the role of public media have changed in recent decades. The challenges contemporary journalists face, the art of asking questions, building trust, and the mission of journalism, which not only informs but also explains and organizes reality. Joanna Dunikowska-Paź also shares how she copes with stress, time pressure, and unforeseen scenarios. JOANNA DUNIKOWSKA-PAŹ – journalist of the main news program of Polish Television "19:30." In news since 2010. She gained experience in the editorial offices of TVP, TVP Info, TVN24, TTV, and Nowa TV. She reported on the most important political and social events.
