Can the trees, birds and herbs depicted in paintings by old masters be found in the park next to the National Museum? It turns out they can. The great tit from Jan Brueghel the Elder’s paintings is a regular resident of the nearby trees, the tawny owl from Abraham Govaert’s feathers probably is too, and certainly Abraham Mignon’s goldfinch or the lichen called golden wall lichen. We invite children and parents to family walks during which we will look for living inspirations from the old masters and judge whether the famous painters managed to depict plants, animals and fungi faithfully — or whether they “made things up” a bit?
We will look at and examine trees (literally!), peek into holes and look under stones. We will learn to recognize trees and bird calls. After the activities you will notice for yourselves what in the masters’ paintings is true and what is stylization, a subjective view or a mistake. You will see familiar works anew, experience them again and remember them longer!
Michał Książek — Polish poet, reporter, cultural studies scholar, forest engineer and ornithologist. He is the author of books, most recently "Atlas of Holes and Cracks" awarded the Literary Prize of the Capital City of Warsaw. The biodróże excursion is his original project.
