Warsaw caroling always had an urban character. People sang not only under house windows but also in courtyards, gateways and craft workshops. In addition to well-known carols, local, playful and sometimes cheeky songs appeared, telling about the everyday life of the city.
Carolers often dressed up as shepherds, elders, angels, and figures drawn from urban imagination. An important attribute was the caroling star — a symbol of light and hope, but also a sign of collective action.
The caroling star was not merely decoration. It led carolers through dark streets, announced good news, ordered the winter time and provided an excuse for visits, conversation and singing.
Be sure to come!
