About the event

Teatr Na Dole

A monodrama — or rather a “mono-comedy” — written by Joanna Szczepkowska has been performed since 1997 on stages across Poland and in many other countries. The actress plays two completely different women who compete with each other as artists. Each understands her profession differently — one, an idealist, pursues “untainted” art, a concert of playing silence that requires a special state of mind from the audience; the other is the personification of kitsch and brazenness, and her “art” consists of crude jokes and a hurried striptease. Both engage with the audience, which cannot remain passive. The play happens here and now — the audience is an important character, making each performance take on a different dimension. The unexpected twist of the piece forces the viewer to ask whether what they were laughing at might also be a human drama.
