Using voice, tapes, and unconventional articulations on their instruments, they create minimalist and visual musical performances. As musicians, they focus mainly on live performances, allowing the space, the roles of performers and audience, and their music to be shaped by the physicality of their playing, the acoustic and aesthetic properties of the venue, and the dynamic that arises between them and the audience. Their recordings rely less on individual instruments and more on the juxtaposition of field recordings, heavily processed instruments, and experimental mixing techniques. They debuted in 2020 on the GLARC label from Glasgow, and their debut album "High Tide" was released on November 1, 2024, on the London label World of Echo. For three years, Milkweed have been refining their formula—drawing from existing source materials (a folklore magazine, a book on Welsh myths, another on Bronze Age human remains, and most recently, a masterful, raw translation of "The Cattle Raid of Cooley" by Thomas Kinsella), cutting out words and processing them with lo-fi production and experimental folk music. At first glance, their musical interests seem transatlantic—they follow a rich creative line that connects British traditional music with songs and melodies from the eastern United States. In reality, their scope is global and rooted in deep history, with prehistoric influences permeating into a turbulent and unsettling present.
