After the evacuation of the Old Town and the quick fall of Powiśle, the insurgent command began to consider capitulation. However, the liberation of Praga by the Red Army in the first half of September 1944 reignited hope for the success of the uprising. The last chance was to hold Czerniaków Powiśle, which, being adjacent to the river, offered the possibility of receiving direct support from the other side of the Vistula. To this end, the remnants of the elite "Radosław" group, including soldiers from the "Zośka" battalion, heroes of the recent daring breakthrough "over the top" to Śródmieście, were sent to Czerniaków.
