Ryszard Bojarski was born in 1954 in Warsaw. He graduated from the State Secondary School of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He studied at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts from 1975–1980; he obtained his diploma from the Faculty of Interior Architecture in 1980.
In spring 1981 a set of music-themed drawings was presented at the Teatr Mały in Warsaw during concerts by the band “Mech”. At the turn of 1982/1983 he executed the visual design for the Polish Cultural Centre in Leipzig. In 1983 he worked as an assistant director on the film “Ażiotaż biletów na czas” based on the prose of Bruno Schulz, directed by Alina Skiba. From 1988 to 1991 he collaborated with the magazines “Fikcje i Fakty” and “Fantastyka”. From 1983 to 2019 he taught design subjects at the State Secondary School of Fine Arts in Warsaw.
In the past — and also today — the drawing technique is most often used to create sketches serving as the basis for final works: architectural, sculptural, painterly, graphic, etc. Sometimes creators produced drawings as independent works on a par with other techniques. In the case of this presentation we are dealing with a conscious choice of the drawing technique to realize the author’s own creative vision.
The work is defined by the author as abstract surrealism or surreal abstractness. Two cycles are presented: Draperie 1 (50×70) and Draperie 2 (A4). On variously shaped clumps of fabric there appear remnants of past eras, symbolizing transience and the irreversible advent of death. Fragments of human and animal skeletons and fragments of architecture dominate this message; sometimes it resembles an archaeological world. The excavated remnants of the past world remind us of its existence and inspire further searches.
An essential feature of this work is the striving for perfect use of the tool — the technique is characterised by extraordinary precision and accuracy. One may quote the famous sentences of Walter Gropius (founder of the Bauhaus): “The artist is an inspired craftsman” and “Technical mastery is essential for every artist”. These are the guiding slogans of this work that accompany the author during the realization of his drawing visions. The works were executed with pencils of varying softness, nib pens, black ink and thin black ballpoint pens.
