About the event

Jan Józef Szczepański in a Time of Unrest

The Faculty of Polish Studies at Jagiellonian University and Jagiellonian University Press invite you to a meeting promoting the book:
“Jan Józef Szczepański. A Writer in a Time of Unrest”

Date and time: 23 March (Monday) 2026, 18:30
Place: Faculty of Polish Studies, Jagiellonian University, Gołębia 16, room 42, Kraków

  • Anna Krasnowolska (the writer’s daughter)
  • Anna Spiechowicz
  • Anna Mateja
  • Jan Zięba

The meeting will be led by: Łukasz Tischner

Description:
Jan Józef Szczepański belonged to the generation of Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński. It seemed that the work of members of this formation would remain an important record of past events; however, the contemporary war in Ukraine and numerous signs of crisis show that their literary testimony is gaining extraordinary topicality. What can the author of “Polish Autumn” say about the world and about ourselves today, in the time of unrest in which we live? Does his work help us better discern the “inter-era” — as the historical moment in which we live is sometimes called? The writer’s daughter and experts on his work will answer these and similar questions.

About the book:
“Jan Józef Szczepański. A Writer in a Time of Unrest”
Editors: Łukasz Tischner, Jan Zięba
Year of publication: 2025
Release date: 25.11.2025

The presented collection of studies significantly expands knowledge about the work of Jan Józef Szczepański, broadening the findings of previous monographs about this writer (by Andrzej Sulikowski, Andrzej Werner, Beata Gontarz). The authors of the essays included here take into account in their expositions lesser-known outstanding works, and also address themes of Szczepański’s writing that have not yet been exploited interpretively.

  • Prof. Krzysztof Krasuski, DSc: “This is a collection of studies that is not only valuable in substance but also very much needed today due to the necessity of recalling and situating the person and work of Jan Józef Szczepański in a contemporary context.”
  • Dr hab. Paweł Rodak, prof. UW (listed as reviewer of the publication materials).
