Shabaka Hutchings A London-born, Barbados-raised composer and multi-instrumentalist, known for his work with Sons of Kemet, The Comet Is Coming, and Shabaka and the Ancestors. A key figure in the new London scene, he moves freely between jazz, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, experimental electronics, and sonic poetry. In 2024, he announced a hiatus from playing the saxophone to fully dedicate himself to flutes – from the Japanese shakuhachi to South American quenas – expanding his practice into spiritual and meditative realms. Shabaka’s style draws on the traditions of Afrofuturism, experimental music, classical composition, and oral ritual forms. Yet this is no mere eclecticism – it is a deliberate search for new modes of expression and an embodiment of artistic transformation. His recent work leans toward contemplation, where sound becomes breath. Following his acclaimed projects with Sons of Kemet and collaborations with Floating Points, Sun Ra Arkestra and André 3000, Shabaka returned in 2024 with the solo album Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace (Impulse!), recorded at the legendary Rudy Van Gelder Studio and created in collaboration with artists such as Esperanza Spalding, Saul Williams and Floating Points. The album continues his concept of “sonic poems” – compositions in which titles are as integral to meaning as the music itself. “Music is not hard – just practice it mechanically, then allow your soul to shine through” – a childhood saying that has become his lifelong motto. Shabaka's performance at the Avant Art Festival 2025 will be his first solo performance in Poland — he has previously appeared here as a member of Shabaka & the Ancestors, for example at the Jazztopad Festival 2017 in Wrocław. Steve Noble & Marek Pospieszalski (UK/PL) Duo connecting a legend of London's free improv scene with one of the most promising Polish saxophonists of the younger generation. Steve Noble, London drummer with "super-precise, ultra-propulsive and hyper-detailed" playing style, and Marek Pospieszalski, Krakow-based multi-instrumentalist and composer. Steve Noble is one of the key figures of the British improvised scene, a "fearless and constantly inventive improviser" who for decades has galvanized encounters with such legends as Derek Bailey, Matthew Shipp, Ishmael Wadada Leo Smith, Stephen O'Malley and Joe McPhee. In the early eighties, he played with Nigerian master drummer Elkan Ogunde, Rip Rig and Panic, and Brion Gysin, later collaborating with pianist Alex Maguire and Derek Bailey (including the famous Company Weeks 1987, 89 and 90). Marek Pospieszalski is a graduate of the Academy of Music in Krakow, saxophonist, clarinetist, flautist, composer and arranger. Scholarship holder of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage and the Young Poland program, he was selected by German magazine JazzThing as one of the "25 most promising musicians in Europe." Winner of Grand Prix Jazz Melomani 2022 in the categories of Musician of the Year and Album of the Year, he opened doors to Portuguese label Clean Feed thanks to his flagship octet. The Noble-Pospieszalski duo poses fundamental questions: can free improv still surprise in today's times? How does this music resonate in the 21st century? Can one still find their own authorial language in this convention? Without expecting answers, focusing rather on constant striving than achieving goals, they present music full of unexpected turns and intense interactions between two generations of improvisers. The answer to these questions can be heard at this year's Avant Art Festival 2025. 🎟️ Tickets: https://tickets.com 🌐 Festival web page: https://festivalwebsite.com 💰 Price: 23€ 🔞 Minimum age: 18+ For any questions about the event, contact the organizer.
